Senior Living, residential care and dementia design is a constantly changing landscape. In this episode TAD host Lori Pinkerton-Rolet is joined by two of the top designers from within this sector in the United Kingdom: Diana Celella and Tracey Richards, for a lively discussion about current and future changes sure to resonate with listeners from around the globe.

This is Part 2 of a 2-part discussion recorded and hosted by Shackleton’s Furniture in Dewsberry, England and focuses on the effect, on facilities design, of changes in models of care. They also discuss creative ways to solve the perennial challenges of storage and the impact that new technologies have on project budgets.

Diana Celella

Diana is an international award-winning designer, Director of The Drawing Room Interiors, Associate Consultant Hammond Care, Dementia Choice, as well as being Past President of SBID and Past Chairman of the Healthcare Design Panel (HDAC). She works in the commercial Interior sector, specialising in healthcare projects, from care homes and dental practices to assisted living and retirement villages, she is recognised throughout the industry as an expert in implementing evidence-based design.

With over 35 years of deep industry knowledge coupled with an analytical and detail-oriented approach, she is equipped to understand the needs of the most discerning clients and audiences delivering an experience rooted in customer service, integrity and expertise. Her creative and design skills make her a keen advocate for her clients, proactively seeking out new ways to enhance her services and continually attain excellence, with client satisfaction the ultimate objective

Leveraging the wisdom of her knowledge and skills, Diana is a University Lecturer for MA Interior Design, a position inspired by her desire to share her designing knowledge and skills. She is a member of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) and in 2016 she was named West Midland Woman of the Year for her contributions to Design Education.

Tracey Richards

Tracey is the founder and lead designer of Three Nine Designs a specialized interior design firm focused on creating innovative, therapeutic environments for the care sector. With over 10 years of experience in interior design and a degree in Interior Architecture, Tracey has spent the past four years running her own practice, where she brings a unique blend of creativity, expertise, and compassion to every project.

Her deep commitment to improving the quality of life for vulnerable populations is reflected in her completion of the prestigious Sterling Dementia Design Course, which provides specialized knowledge in designing for those living with dementia. This certification allows Tracey to craft spaces that promote safety, comfort, and cognitive support while maintaining a homely and inviting atmosphere.

Under her leadership, Three Nine Designs has earned a reputation for creating beautiful, functional care environments that foster independence, dignity, and well-being. Her work spans care homes, assisted living facilities, and memory care units, where she collaborates closely with caregivers, healthcare professionals, and facility operators to deliver tailored design solutions that enhance both the physical environment and the care experience.

Lori Pinkerton-Rolet

Lori has been Director of Park Grove Design since 1993, working in the hospitality and high-end residential sectors, with a keen interest in the improvement of design criteria within care, dementia and retirement facilities. In 2012 she received the BIID Award of Merit for outstanding achievement in the field of Interior Design and is a Past President of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID), and a member of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA). As a consultant, she has advised furniture and flooring companies on product development and was appointed by Azko Nobel (Dulux) to conduct the research for their care and dementia colour ranges. Lori is a frequent speaker at international interior design events, and hosts the international thirdage.design podcast (TAD), with listeners in 63 countries.
